Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why should I hire a certified contractor like Seashore Construction Corp?
Either you're skilled with your hands but have no time or you're toolbox-challenged. For whatever reason when it comes to remodeling, you (like most homeowners) should hire a contractor to do a major project rather than hammer it out yourself. Just as remodeling your kitchen calls for a comprehensive plan, so does hiring a quality remodeling contractor. It's not as simple as grabbing the phone book and calling the first "pro" listed. You need to do your homework to protect your home and your finances. Seashore Construction has been in the business for close to 30 years.
Protecting your home or commercial property against liability and risk is the most important decision you can make. Be warned: by hiring an unlicensed contractor, you assume responsibility for any damage to property or person that takes place on your jobsite. At Seashore Construction we say, "let us take the risk". New Jersey requires licensed home repair contractors to have active general liability and workers compensation insurance, protecting you as the consumer. Because our license also gives you certain legal rights, it is your guarantee that we meet all codes and provide superior workmanship.

We take the risk, so you don’t have to.

7. Does Seashore Construction file for all of the necessary permits?
Seashore Construction complies with all of your township’s local building codes and state laws. There are times when you may elect to file for your own permits in which case Seashore Construction will assist if needed. We never begin construction without the necessary clearances.

8. How frequently should my roof be replaced?
Most homeowners will only replace their roof once or twice in a lifetime. Commercial properties will be more frequent than that. It is best to get a full inspection as part of your estimate. The following are things that may indicate that your roof needs replacing:

Missing, cracked or curling shingles
Cracked or blistered membrane roofing
Shingle, sheathing or siding decay
Leakage in the attic after heavy rains
Stains on interior walls or ceilings

9. Should I reroof or tear-off my existing roof?
Building codes state that you are allowed to have two layers of roofing on your roof, so you may elect to just re-roof if you have one existing layer.   However due to the probability of some wood deck repairs and old damaged felt, it is always recommended that you remove the existing layer(s) prior to installing a new roof if at all possible. You should definitely tear-off your existing roof is the shingles are extremely curled or there are large areas of suspected plywood damage or you have two layers or more of roofing. Most homeowners will only replace their roof once or twice in a lifetime. Commercial properties will be more frequent than that. It is best to get a full inspection as part of your estimate. The following are things that may indicate that your roof needs replacing:

     Missing, cracked or curling shingles
     Cracked or blistered membrane roofing
     Shingle, sheathing or siding decay
Leakage in the attic after heavy rains
Stains on interior walls or ceilings

10. When is it time to replace my deck?
If your deck is suffering from nail pops, cracks, rotted steps, warped railings and gaps between boards, it’s probably time to consider repairing or replacing it. Seashore Construction will help determine if there's any major structural damage, in addition to the improvements needed to bring your deck up to code and back to life.

11. How do I know my siding needs replacement?
Although the answer to this question depends on the type of siding, it is generally a good idea to consider replacement when your existing siding is visibly worn or has suffered damage. Things to look for include rotten fascia or trim, blistering paint, cracked caulk, rotten casing around windows and a general run-down appearance. Nothing changes a building’s appearance like new siding, and CNN Money reports that you will boost your home’s value and see an 82% to 87% return on your investment.

12. How can replacing my windows and doors help me save energy and money?
Home improvement experts agree that updating your windows and doors can help you save on energy bills, improve the look and infrastructure of your home and add long-lasting value. Drafts, cracks and inadequate insulation are all factors that contribute to a cold home in the winter and a hot home in the summer. Save money and energy by investing in Energy Star compliant windows provided to you by Seashore Construction.

13. What is the best material to use for railing & fencing based on the location of my home?
If your home is located within 30 miles of salt water or your city is exposed to frequent changes in weather patterns year after year, vinyl railing and fencing is the best choice for your home. If your home property is prone to mold, moss, and wild animals or the property is surrounded by trees and pollen, aluminum powder coated railing and fencing is the correct choice. Wood and/or chain link may be a cheaper alternative but the life expectancy of these products is under 10 years while our aluminum & vinyl is guaranteed for a lifetime.

14. I own a home in the historic district, can Seashore Construction still help me?
Your home in the historic district has much to offer. It is an eclectic representation of your city and its deep history. Any standard exterior improvement would need to be approved by the historic board and they seldom decline construction companies. Their sole interest is to keep the integrity and character of the area in place. Seashore Construction will handle all of the necessary permits and your mind can be at ease knowing that the job will be done professionally.

15. Does Seashore Construction do home additions & exterior remodeling?
Yes we do! Please call and speak to one of our contractors who specialize in home building and remodeling.

16. Will I recoup the cost of my home improvement investment?
When undertaking large remodeling and home addition projects, it is smart to research your local real estate market to find out if your project will return your investment when it is time to sell. Depending on where you live, the right project may return 100% of your investment. That is why research is the smartest way to begin any remodeling project.
